Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles report 23.08.18

Round 6 of the Midlands Cross Country MTB series was held at the Dudmaston Woods Shropshire hosted by Clee Cycles/Bridgenorth CC. It also included the Midlands Regional Championships, so there was plenty at stake. The original under 10’s course was changed to the more difficult Under 12 course this had good climbs, fast downhills with plenty of tree roots and fast flowing sections throughout, all of which proved popular with the talented young riders. Daniel Ward of Mercia CC-Lloyds Cycles was gridded on the front row of the grid and was always in the front group of riders swapping places with top riders throughout. At the finish he was just pipped on the line to take a deserved third place in what had been a close, exciting race. The winner was Jacob Steed of Bolsover & District CC. In the Expert Male class local rider Christian Aucote was disappointed to finish in 10th place where the winner was Jonathon Brain.

A change of discipline to road racing had Mercia CC-Llloyds Cycles Under 10 rider Daniel Ward continuing his battle for the Mallory Park Youth League Championship in Round 14 at the motor racing circuit.  He fought all the way to the finishing to take a fine second place behind the winner, and likely league champion, George Cooper of Sherwood Pines Cycles Forme. With one round to go another good race from Ward should see him take second overall in the league.

The Mercia Clubs Tuesday night 10 mile Time Trials on the Anslow course were both won by Derby Mercury’s fast improving Anthony Harper. In the first trial his winning time was 23:42, he was followed home by Mercia’s Eric Voronovich in 25:49. Other riders times were Pascal Arnoux, Zepnat, 26:36, Keith Staley 27:50, John Brewin 31:30 and at one lap David Peters, 19:34.

Harper took the next Trial in the even better time of 23:17. His current form would indicate that he will have a fine Cyclo Cross season this year. Other times were Rob Gower 25:20, Pascal Arnoux Zepnat, 26:17, Keith Staley 26:38, Steve Herriman 28:05, John Brewin 32:23 & Dave Baines 32:54.

Mercia rider Rob Gower recorded a well deserved fastest time on the Mercia clubs Thursday evenings 10 mile TT the Sudbury/Doveridge course. His time of 24:16 was good enough to beat the 25:05 recorded by Mathew Bate of SPRC.  Other times were Tim Sharp 27:12, Len Best, Matlock CC, 27:24 and Kieron Patterson 29:27.
