Mallorca 2013

The week for the next club trip to Mallorca has been fixed as w/c Monday 15th April 2013. The departure date could be any day between Saturday 13th April and Tuesday 16th April. The exact dates will depend on flight availability and which dates riders would prefer. There may even be a mix of riders leaving on different departure dates.

We are announcing this now so riders can plan around work and family commitments. The average cost of the whole trip this year, including spending money, was about £500-£550. We will update you when we have more information regarding flights in September. Any questions let me know.

Meriden

Many of you will have visited the National Arboretum at Alrewas and viewed the many memorials, mostly to service people who have died on active service. After the First World War cyclists subscribed for a memorial to their comrades killed in that war and a National War Memorial dedicated to cyclists was erected on Meriden village green in 1921. It was further dedicated to cyclists who were killed in the Second World War.

An Annual Remembrance Service has taken place since 1921 and this year is on Sunday 20th May, starting at 11.am. It is organised by CTC on behalf of the National Clubs and British Cycling is one of the clubs that lay a wreath at the memorial. It is a traditional service with a laying of the wreaths but also encompasses the celebration of cycling as well. Refreshments are available afterwards at the Village Hall and I can vouch for the cakes.

It is part of the Heart of England Rally and a full programme is available at here

Meriden is just over 30 miles from Burton so a nice little ride. CTC has a more leasurely ride starting at 8am from the Abbey Arcade by the Market Place but you will be able to set off later. There is a lanes route after Tamworth through Shustoke and Maxstoke. I hope a few Mercia HBM members can make it

April Blog from Club Secretary Tony Marlow

Welcome back to our members who enjoyed the Majorcan sunshine – pity about the change to winter weather in the UK! The club events will have to stay as 5 miles until the road works have moved on – I am closely monitoring the roadworks on the Yoxall course and when that comes clear I will look into using it more if our own course road works are still in place.

The club is progressing on the road to becoming an approved British Cycling go ride club and we have decided that it will be better if we can have three approved coaches. Becoming approved involves a two day course and the newly appointed coach will then be expected to assist with the running of some of the courses for youngsters which will mainly be at Rosliston centre on Saturday mornings. The club will meet the cost of the course. If any member would like to learn more about becoming a coach please contact myself, Richard or Anne Staley for more information.

Thanks for the support from officials and marshals at the first club events – much appreciated – there is always room for more marshals and volunteers to train as timekeepers and recorders. If you have spare time on Tuesday evenings and want to find out more please come along.
