One Hundred and thirty riders start in Reliability Trials despite Strong winds
130 riders signed up to ride in the Mercia HBM Cycling Club’s 100 and 50 kilometres Reliability Trials. Due to the very strong winds 19 riders failed to complete the distances, which was understandable considering the conditions. The outward westerly route was into the worst of the wind with some riders having difficulty remaining upright and riding at an average speed of 12 miles per hour. With the wind behind them on the return leg, they were averaging about 25 miles per hour. 53 riders completed the 100km. The route took the cyclists from Burton to go through Hanbury, Bramshall, Milwich, Sandon and Hopton towards Stafford to turn off for Tixall then onto to Milford Common for a voluntary Café stop. The riders continued through Brockton to climb up onto Cannock Chase to continue up to the GPO tower, then mainly downhill to Rugeley, then over Blithfield Reservoir to Abbot’s Bromley and returning to Burton via Hoar Cross, Scotch Hills Dunstall and Tatenhill.

53 cyclists completed the 100km with the following Mercia HBM CC and other local riders completing the distance within the following times: 3.5 Hours Christian Aucote, Richard Knott, Ewan Davidson, Ben Startin Steve Chambers, Gareth Fearn, Peter Collins, Warren Evans, Simon Parker, Jason Seabridge. Alistair Staley and Kevin Potter (Plan B Racing). Within 4 hours Paul Martin, David Eyre, Mick Skivington, and Dave Burton (CC Giro). Within 4.5 hours Nick Chapman, Carl Stout. Martin Robbins and Andrew Thomas (Unattached) Within 5.5 Hours Gary Bush, Jim Kavanagh and John Wright.

The 50 km riders followed the 100km route towards Bramshall then carried on through Kingstone, Blyth and Newton to Admaston then over Blithfield Reservoir to join the 100km route back to Burton. Completing the 50km distance within 2.5 hours were Chris Ray, Alan Bark, Kevin Hornsby, Daniel Partington, Joshua Waters, Steve Campbell, Justin Waters, Sam Hicks, James Allen, Jason Roe, James Tipper, Mark Eccleston, Alec Taylor, Neil Sleigh, Kieron Patterson, Graham Perkins, John Tipper, Andy Spencer, Mike Barker, Anne Staley & Ray Yeomans (Plan B Racing). Within 3 hours Graham Dingley, Andy Benfield, Matt Long, Terry Knight and Tony Marlow. Within 4 Hours Gary Gee, Paul Hathaway and Ian Jarvis.
