Mercia report 01-01-12
All the latest news from mid December to date, including Mercia Riders in Cyclo Cross events.
The last cyclo cross prior to Christmas was round 11 of the Notts & Derby
League held at Sherwood Pines Park near Nottingham, which saw eleven riders
competing from Plan B and the Mercia HBM cycling clubs. The first races involved
the three Plan B Waters brothers.
In the under 12’s Elliott rode well to finish in 15th place on a very slippery course out of 52 finishers, James Swadling (Nottingham Clarion) again the winner. The next race was the under 14’s Joshua finished a good 4th despite him not feeling well. Brother Bailey tired on the last lap to finish in 17th place. William Gascoyne (Now a member of Matlock CC) was again the winner.
There were eight Mercia HBM riders in the senior race. The best placed was Christian Aucote in 27th a good result considering he started at the back of the field of the 157 finishers. Richard Knott 54th, Gareth Fearn 88th, Justin Waters 89th (he would have finished higher up if his seat pin hadn’t have snapped) James Tipper 131st, Gary Bush 145th and Adrian Waters 153rd. Tom Comb failed to finish when he retired on the last lap. The winner was David Fletcher (Boardman Bikes)
Anne Staley (Plan B RT) finished first lady in her final competitive event in 2011 in the Manchester and District Time Trials Association Christmas 10 mile time trial at Goostrey in Cheshire. There were 150 entries with riders in fancy dress on a variety of cycles including tandems. Unfortunately the heavy rain somewhat spoilt the occasion. Out of the 150 riders only 17 did not star. Anne braved the elements by wearing waterproof bottoms, to time 30 minutes 52 seconds, a good time on the undulating course. This was fast enough to win the fastest ladies prize. The fastest rider was Steven Burke (Macclesfield Wheelers) in 22 54.
Elliot, Joshua and Bailey Waters (Plan B RT) competed in the Midland Area Cyclo Cross Championships at the Sundorne Sports village in Shrewsbury. In the under 10s Elliot Waters rode well to finish in 8th place in a big field. In the under 14’s Joshua finished 5th,very close to the 3rd and 4th placed riders. Bailey was 20th out 38 riders. Heanor Clarion’s William Gascoyne was the winner.
A week later Elliot & Joshua travelled to Bradford to compete in round 5 of the National Trophy Cyclo Cross races at Peel Park in very muddy conditions. In the under 10’s race Elliot after starting at the rear of the competitors he made is way up the leaders to finish in 3rd place (another lap and he would have won it.) In the under 14’s Joshua was gridded in 22nd place when he should have been on the front row in 7th place. He was riding very well trading places between 3rd and 4th when the mud clogged up in his cycle and broke his rear gears. After a bike change he managed to pull back to finish in 10th place. Daniel Tullet of Hargroves Cycles was again a worthy winner.
