Mercia Report 05-07-09

Simon Parker finishes 6th in Mallory Park Road Race. Simon Smith & Noel Adams record fast times in 25 mile Time Trial & Ian Hill completes 24 hour Audax Arrow to the York Rally.
The improving Simon Parker finished in 6th place in the latest Tuesday evening Road Race at Mallory Park over 55 kilometres for 3rd & 4th category riders (Simon now has 4 points on his racing licence). First place went to junior rider Sam Lowe (Go Sports Specs RT) from Derby.

David Clarke finished in 17th place in the National Road Race Championships. His chances of a higher placing were not helped when he punctured when the race had only covered 50 kilometres of the 200 km race. The championship started & finished in Abergavenny with a number of climbs, including The Iron Mountain (The Tumble). Despite the presence of a number of continental riders like Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, David Miller & Roger Hammond who were heavily marked, the winner was Kristian House from the British team Rapha Condor. 97 riders finished the race out of the 190 that started.

In the CC Giro series of races for all ages held on the Sprint Circuit at Curborough. Elliot Waters finished 4th in the under 8's. Bailey Waters was 14th in the under 10's race. In the under 12's Joshua punctured & didn't finish. Phil Machin rode in the 3rd & 4th category senior race but wasn't placed.

The Royal Sutton Cycling Club also promoted an evening race on the same circuit for 3rd & 4th category riders lasting 1 hour & 2 laps. Of the three Mercia HBM riders Phil Machin. Simon Parker & Keith Staley, Machin was the highest placed finisher. The winner was Edward Parker (Sheffield University CC).

In perfect conditions in the Central District Ladies Cycling Alliance 25 mile time trial on the Etwall Uttoxeter course some fast times were recorded by two club members with Simon Smith timing 53 49 & Noel Adams 55 14. Out of an entry of 120 riders 104 finishers were under 1 hour. Matt Bottrill (Team I Ride) was the fastest in 48 05.

Four other club members chose to ride the Hinckley CRC 10 mile time trial at Wolvey in Warwickshire. Matt Simons timed 24 19, Ivor James 29 13, Kieron Patterson 29 26 & Peter Rose 30 41(who beat his age standard by 19 seconds). Alistair McChesney (Solihull CC) timed 21 24 to win the time trial.

On a very warm evening the heat didn't stop David Clarke improving his 10 mile time by timing 22 05 in the Mercia HBM club's hilly 10 mile time trial on the Anslow circuit. The second fastest rider Daniel Partington (Plan B) was nearly 3 minutes behind in 24 52. Keith Staley was 3rd fastest in 25 00. The rest of the 18 riders times were as follows: Jack Hugill 25 02, Neil Sleigh (Plan B) 26 54, Jeff Slinn 26 55, Mark Eccleston 27 04, Justin Waters 27 07, Ben Startin 27 27, Alec Taylor 27 45, Mick Abbott 28 16, Adrian Waters 29 24, Andrew Wendle 29 52, Nick Marriott 29 56, Kieron Patterson 30 01, Colin Johnson 30 27, Andy Burton 30 56, Phil Knott 31 36, Daniel Padmore 34 20, Peter Rose 35 20 & at 1 lap Dave Peters 18 18.

Ian Hill joined a Derby Mercury team led by Jim Hopper for a 24 hour Audax Arrow ride from Yoxall. The aim was to cycle a high mileage to York with no support from any following vehicle. The riders faced strong wind on the westerly leg to Overton and a ride down to the Welsh border to Welshpool before returning through Shrewsbury to the night rest near Burton. The team set out early morning to ride to Melton Mowbray & Cranwell to turn north through Gainsborough. Fierce winds hampered progress on the flat roads around Thorne but they had managed to complete 301 miles as the 24 hour time passed at Selby. The riders stopped the rest of the weekend at the annual York Cycle Show before riding back on the Monday.
