“Matt” beats “Gloss” at Cyclo Cross. David Clarke wins the King of Mountains Jersey. in the Camaroons four stage race. Bailey Waters finishes 2nd in Notts & Derby Cyclo Cross.
The Mercia HBM's renewed interest in Cyclo Cross saw Matt Simon's the best Mercia rider in the Lichfield City Cycling Club's Cyclo Cross held at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield. This was the fourth West Midlands League event.
Matt finished in 40th place, ahead of Phil Machin in 42nd & Keith Staley in 46th in the 60 rider field. The winner was David Collins (Science in Sport / Trek). In the Nottingham Clarion Goose Fair 25 mile time trial, held in wet & windy conditions. Simon's timed 1 07 26 & Noel Adams 1 05 14. Half of the 100 rider field didn't start or finish the event due to the conditions. The winner was former Best All Rounder Champion Kevin Dawson ( Sports cover .com) in 59 30.
David Clarke won the King of the Mountains Jersey in the four stage Grand Prix Chanel Biya in the Camaroons, guesting again for the German team Norland Hamburg. Clarke was 8th overall & 2nd in the prologue race. The overall winner was French rider Thomas Rostollan (AVC Aix-En Provence) Since returning from the Camaroons Clark did four hill climbs in one weekend, in readiness for the forthcoming national championships at Matlock. In the Holme Valley & Huddersfield Star Wheelers events he was 5th & 4th respectively, both won by Matt Clinton (KFS Special Vehicles). Clarke then travelled down to South London to compete in the Catford CC hill climb on York's Hill, in which he finished in 13th position. Jody Crawforth (Arctic Premier RT) was the winner. In the afternoon climb on Titsey Hill organised by the Bec CC Clarke was eleventh. Dan Lloyd (An Post / Sean Kelly) won this one. Clarke was not at his best after picking up a stomach bug in the Camaroons.
Bailey Waters had his best result yet when he finished 2nd in the last Notts & Derby League Cyclo Cross held at Bulwell, in the under 10's race, his brother Elliott finished 14th in the 43 rider field The winner was Scott Hookway (Sherwood CC). In the under 12's race Joshua was 5th. Arthur Green ( Matlock CC) won this one.
