Mercia HBM Cycling Club’s Roger Owen organises the Burton & District Cycling Association 100 mile time trial in which Noel Adams wins the club’s championship
Roger Owen organised this year,s Burton & District Cycling Alliance 100 mile time trial based on Etwall. He was rewarded with a full field of 120 riders. In recent years the event has been a must for those cyclists wanting to achieve fast times to further their chances in Cycling Time Trial’s British Best All Rounder competion. This year was again no exception, despite a cool north westerly wind on the two legs out to Blyth Bridge. Over 15 riders recorded times under 4hrs. The fastest being Nick Bowdler (Farnborough & Camberley CC) In 3 hrs 37 minuets 52 seconds. The fastest BDCA rider was Charles Taylor (South Pennine RC) in 3 47 52. Three Burton cyclists also rode Noel Adams, despite loosing time to a period of cramp in both legs finished in 4 53 40 to win the Mercia HBM 100 mile club championship.
Ann Staley (Plan B) timed an excellent 4 50 24 in her first 100 mile time trial. Likewise Kevin Potter, also Plan B recorded 4 16 43 at his first ride at 100 miles.
For those preferring the shorter distances Four Mercia HBM riders rode in the Heanor Clarion 10 mile open time trial on the Etwall Foston course. A deceptively hard ride out on the longer leg to Foston made it difficult to make up lost time on the shorter return leg to Etwall, the fastest of the four was Gary Brown in 24 18, followed by Simon Parker in 24 50, Ivor James 27 39 & Peter Rose 30 07, his fastest at the distance so far this year, but 1min 18 seconds too slow for an age standard medal. Adverse conditions didn’t slow the winner Barry Charlton (Lyme RC) down much, he timed 20 46.
There were twenty three riders in the 2nd evening club time trial to be held at Yoxall on a fine sunny evening. Sean Sleigh (Plan B) was the fastest in 23 29, second was Simon Smith (Coalville Wheelers) 23 36 & 3rd was Steve Plummer 23 41.The rest of the times were as follows. Matt Simons 24 54. Gary Brown 25 42. Keith Staley 26 08. Daniel Partington (Plan B) 26 20. Simon Parker 27 27. Graham Martin (Coalville Wheelers) 26 50. Richard Clarke (Birmingham CC) 27 25. Neil Walters (CC Giro) 27 43. Phil Jones 26 05. Geoff Lea 28 08. Mark Eccleston 28 43. Neil Sleigh (Plan B) 28 45. Tony Marlow 29 20. Colin Johnson 29 43. Jim Hopper (Derby Mercury on trike) 29 55. Andrew Windle 30 00. Adrian Waters 30 14. Phil Knott 30 50. Peter Rose 33 00. & Debbie Clarke 34 51.
