Mercia Report 29-12-06
The Mercia HBM C.C can look back on a successful year in terms of sponsorship & promotions during 2006. In January we were pleased to announce a new sponsor Howard Bond Management & Construction Services. Continuing into January, with the first promotion, the 100 & 50 km Reliability Trials. Which were well supported by local riders. February was the 40th anniversary dinner & prize presentation at the Albion Hotel. Then from the end of March to the beginning of September the club ran the weekly evening time-trials at both Tatenhill & Yoxall.
In June we promoted the first open event a 25 mile time-trial attracting a full field of 120 riders held at Fradley. Later in the month we ran our first Cyclo-cross races, part of the Festival of Fun Celebrations at the Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Swadlincote. On to September to the 100 km Audax ride held at Rosliston again proving a popular challenge for local riders.
In October a mixture of young & old cyclists reminisced & celebrated the club’s 40th Anniversary at the Shobnall Sports & Social Club. Finally in November another Cyclo-cross this time held at the National Forestry Centre at Rosliston where 170 riders battled it out in 4 races from 5 years old to 70 plus.
On the racing front David Clarke had another successful year at road racing & hill climbing, both on the international scene & in the U.K. Despite work commitments Noel Adams again qualified for the National Best All Rounder Competition at 50, 100, & 12 hours.
It has also been very sad year with the loss of three active & much liked members of the club. First our President & founder member Tom Slater, then Don Eaton, and Jeff. Warren.
The elected positions in the club were as follows: * Chairman: Les Lowe. * Secretary & Treasurer: Tony Marlow. * Racing Secretary: Keith Staley. * Social Secretaries: Ian Hill & Peter Rose. * Touring Secretary: Nick Marriott. * Committee Members: Ken Goy, Keith Lee, Robert Beddows, and Wally Pasley.
