RICHARD KNOTT WINS HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP & PHIL. JONES WINS THE EVENING HANDICAP TROPHY

There were seven competitors in the Annual Hillclimb Championship held on Marchington Cliff, Richard Knott was the winner by only 3 seconds. From Plan B’s Christian Aucote. The competitors times for the 1,000 yard climb were Richard Knott 2:45, Christian Aucote 2:48, Ben Eedy (South Pennine R.C.) 2:58, Simon Parker 3:14, Matt Simons 3:15, Roger Owen 3:41, & Ray Yeoman’s (South Pennine R.C.) 4:00. The Anniversary Trophy awarded to the best Mercia H.B.M. rider overall in both hillclimbing & freewheeling (held after the hillclimb) went to Simon Parker with Roger Owen second.

The rider with the most points in the evening 10 mile handicap competion (the best four events to count) was won by Phil Jones with 78 points, Adrian Waters was a close second with 75. The rest of those who qualified were Simon Parker 71, Phil Knott 68, Richard Knott 66, Keith Staley 64, Ivor James 61, Pete Rose 42, Nick Marriott & Stan Crofts 41.

Jim Hopper organised the C.T.C. Derby District Association 100 in 8 & 50 in 4 Reliability Trials starting from Markeaton Park. Twenty riders from both Burton & Derby rode in the trials. The first 50 miles covered some hilly terrain via Kedleston, Duffield, Wirksworth, Middleton Top to Kniveton. Then through Ashbourne to Osmaston, Wyaston & Alkmonton to cycle along Long Lane, through Cubley to Rocester & onto Hollington to turn for Tean & along the A522 to Uttoxeter to complete the first 50 miles. A combination of hills & punctures meant Mercia H.B.M riders Peter Rose & Ken Goy finished outside of the 4 hour time limit.

The second 50 miles followed an easier route through Abbotts Bromley, Hill Ridware, Handsacre, Fradley, Roddige Lane to Alrewas Arboretum to turn left through Catton Park to Walton on Trent & on into Barton Under Needwood. The final 20 miles were along familiar lanes through Tatenhill, Anslow, Rolleston & Marston to Hilton then through Sutton on the Hill to Thurvaston, joining Long Lane again to cycle the final few miles to Mickleover to finish the second 50 miles & the 100 miles at Markeaton Park. Glen Corcoran (Burton C.T.C) finished the 50 miles within the time limit. Mercia H.B.M rider Ian Hill completed the 100 miles in 8 hours as did Burton C.T.C riders Ben Startin & Geoff Kedzierski. Another Burton C.T.C rider Richard Mottram was also another puncture victim, finishing outside the 8 hour limit.
